Special lecture to Thai missionary monks & Singapore Feb 2015
Ven. Phra Mana is officially invited by Thailand to give a special lecture to 60 selected Thai missionary monks who are now preparing to travel and spread Buddhism in many countries around the world, including Australia.
This special program to train these keen Thai monks who want to teach Dhamma outside Thailand began 21 years ago. Apart from the barrier of languages of new countries they travel to, Thai monks are not well prepared to face different cultural values, and most importantly, what the people in the West want to learn from Buddhism. Most of the Thai monks do best in performing traditional Buddhist ceremonies but may not be so successful in teaching Dhamma.
Ven. Phra Mana will talk on ‘The Western View of Buddhist History’ with slide presentation and vdo. He will condense his Dhamma teaching skills and Buddhist history research to inspire the missionary monks.

Updating Archaeological Knowledge of The Buddha’s LifeThe Western mind is very keen on archaeology hence the great explorers of Egyptian and other ancient civilizations. They are extremely interested in the historical time of the Buddha - his birth as a prince, his great education and what influenced his self-development. They can see a parallel with Greek philosophers, and other great minds who share a similar time.
The Classical Art of Buddhism One point of great interest for the western mind is to learn that the first Buddha image was carved by the world’s greatest sculptors- the Greeks. This is Gandhara Buddha from the Hellenistic period. Since then there has been the creation of the Buddha image in all countries. Why was there no Buddha image carved 500 years earlier? Why Greek appearance?
Beyond Myths and Magic Whilst everyone loves stories and myths surrounding to the life of the Buddha, the western mind prefers to know the historical, cultural, political, environmental, social and spiritual facts.
Why Aussies are interested in Dhamma Australia is a free thinking country, with a good climate and lifestyle. Aussies value their leisure time, but there is a growing awareness of something missing, combined with a lapse in Christianity. Many Aussiea are turning from traditional sport and recreation to exploring their inner self. This can be in the form of yoga, meditation or similar forms of self-development. There is a greater awareness of Buddhism due to the high profile and respect for the Dalai Lama.

หลักฐานโบราณคดีใหม่เกี่ยวกับพุทธประวัติชาวยุโรปให้ความสนใจเป็นอย่างมากในหลักฐานโบราณคดีประวัติศาสตร์ของพระพุทธเจ้า โดยเทียบเคียงกับประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมสมัยของนักปรัชญากรีก อียิปต์ เปอร์เชีย และมองเห็นการแลกเปลี่ยน การยืม ความคิด ศิลปะ ความเชื่อของโลกโบราณที่มีผลต่อพุทธศาสนา อะไรบ้างที่เรายืมเขามา พุทธศิลป์ในรสนิยมของชาวตะวันตก สิ่งที่สร้างความประทับใจมากที่สุดต่อชาวตะวันตก คือ การค้นพบว่า พระพุทธรูปองค์แรกของโลกแกะสลักโดยนายช่างฝีมือชาวกรีก ก่อนที่ชาวพุทธทั่วโลกจะทำตาม อะไรเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้มีการสร้างพุทธรูป ทำไมจึงต้องมีลักษณะเหมือนเทพเจ้า และ ทำไม 500 ปีก่อนหน้านั้น ชาวพุทธรุ่นแรกจึงไม่ยอมสร้างพระพุทธรูป เบื้องหลังความมหัศจรรย์ ในขณะที่ชาวพุทธทั่วไปนิยมเรื่องราวเชิงเทพนิยาย สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ของขลัง พลังมหัศจรรย์ของพุทธประวัติ ชาวตะวันตกกลับมุ่งมองหาหลักฐานคำอธิบายเบื้องหลังเหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ของพุทธประวัติในเชิงวัฒนธรรม การเมือง สิ่งแวดล้อม สังคม เศรษฐกิจ ทำไมชาวออสเตรเลียน จึงสนใจพุทธศาสนา ประเทศออสเตรเลียได้รับการจัดอันดับต้น ๆ ของประเทศที่น่าอยู่อาศัยที่สุดในโลก ชาวออสเตรเลียนส่วนใหญ่มีความพึงพอใจกับวิถีชีวิตที่ง่าย ๆ กับธรรมชาติที่สวยงาม แต่กำลังมองหาสิ่งที่ขาดหายไปในชีวิต ซึ่งไม่อาจค้นพบได้ในศาสนาคริสต์ จึงมุ่งหาคำตอบจากการกีฬา โยคะ ภาวนา การพัฒนาตน และที่สำคัญที่สุดคืออิทธิพลของ องค์ดาไล ลามะแห่งธิเบตซึ่งเป็นผู้ทำให้พุทธศาสนาเป็นที่ยอมรับ เคารพในออสเตรเลีย พระไทยเราจะสอนฝรั่งอย่างไรดี
